Artist Statement

Judit Mathe is a West Yorkshire based visual artist who explores the multi-layered essence of humanness, strength and fragility, beauty and ugliness, femininity, idols and fetishism. A childhood filled with fairy tales, the fascination with Christian iconography are entwined and deeply embedded into Judit’s practice as well as her Hungarian heritage, the folklore and textile traditions. The artist follows a practice-led research starting with the collection of materials, abandoned broken dolls and other discarded objects. The creative process is a subjective, emotional response to these objects where the artist uses a combination of wrapping and needle-weaving techniques to create hybrids, artefacts and effigies carrying a juxtaposition between ugliness and beauty, suppression and empowerment. Judit is influenced by the art of Louis Bourgeois, Frances Bacon and Judith Scott. Judit has a strong background in Art History which underpins her whole practice and she recently completed her MA in Creative Practice at Leeds Arts University.
